Community Party Radio on So-Metro Radio

Commentary on urban issues from a grassroots perspective. Next show: Tuesday, September 29 at 9:00 PM. We’ll talk to Spanish Speaking Center of New Britain CT executive director Mary Sanders about her recent announcement that SSC, a nonprofit that served the city’s poor for 50 years, has closed permanently due to budget cuts. Connecticut Democrats (Gov. Dannel Malloy and the Democratic Party controlled General Assembly) cut SSC’s state funding, while Republican New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart cut the remainder of SSC’s cash flow. A bipartisan effort. Mary, Arshad Saalik and I will talk about CP’s Sandra Bland Police Reform and Economic Justice Plan, a policy paper that we will present to legislators and the public in October. The second half of the show will feature an analysis of the 2016 presidential election. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we talk to police officers who were run out of their departments for speaking out against corruption. Auburn, Alabama cop Justin Hanners was fired for taking a stand against ticket and arrest quotas. Retired LAPD Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey is now speaking out about police culture, brutality, racism and the abuse officers suffer from their superiors. Tune in!

False Choice: The Bipartisan Attack on the Working Class, the Poor and Communities of Color

Trebol Press has published my first nonfiction book on politics. The Democrats and Republicans spar publicly, but the reality is that these two parties have more in common than they have differences. This duopoly is run on corporatist economic policies that benefit the ruling class, at the expense of the workers and the poor. Global hegemony is at the core of the foreign policies of the Dems and the GOP. False Choice is a diary of national and global issues, set against the backdrop of the Connecticut gubernatorial election between Gov. Dannel Malloy and Republican challenger Tom Foley that was rated as the most negative in the country in 2014. The book also features commentary on politics at Hartford City Hall, including analysis of the highly controversial baseball stadium deal orchestrated by Mayor Pedro Segarra and City Council President Shawn Wooden. Visit the Trebol Press website for ordering info.

Policy Watch

Luke Bronin’s Democratic Party mayoral primary victory over Pedro Segarra is a non-event. One corporatist Democrat replaces another. Bronin won because he had more money behind him. Fox CT reported that Bronin raised $800,000 and outspent Segarra 3 to 1. Bronin will be more of the same. Arshad had some interesting questions during a Facebook conversation with Mary and I on Bronin’s victory. “So, many questions. Is Bronin going to be the lap dog of the governor? Why couldn’t Segarra appeal to the African American/Caribbean voters? Who contributed to Bronin? $800,000 is short money for Southern CT financial elites.” While Segarra did everything he could to avoid a public conversation about the murder rate in Hartford (26 homicides in 2015), Bronin exploited the deaths by hosting a campaign event disguised as a community meeting about urban gun violence. Gov. Dannel Malloy, Bronin’s former boss, has never mentioned gun violence or poverty in Hartford during any of his State of the State addresses. Bronin wasn’t hosting any public meetings on shootings in this city while he was working for Malloy. Don’t believe the hype. The only change at City Hall will be a new name on the door of the Mayor’s Office.

In case you missed it, and you very well could have, as corporate media outlets buried the story, a Hartford Police officer who was suspended twice before was fired last week for his racist rant at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in July. NBC Connecticut’s Matt Austin reported on the story. You can watch the NBC CT video here.

“A Hartford police officer who has been banned for life from Foxwoods Resort and Casino now faces the prospect of losing his job.

It comes in response to a report from the police department’s internal affairs division, which details a night allegedly fueled by alcohol and filled with derogatory and racist statements.

” ‘These are very serious allegations and we at the police department take them very seriously,’ said Hartford police spokesman Deputy Chief Brian Foley.

Police began investigating the conduct of Officer Kamil Stachowicz after a Foxwoods employee said Stachowicz drank too much while off-duty and caused problems at one of the casino’s nightclubs in the early hours of Feb. 25.

“One Foxwoods staffer ‘reported that as a black man he found Officer Stachowicz (sic) actions offensive and was appalled and concerned with the actions and statements of Officer Stachowicz. Especially, as someone who identified himself as a member of law enforcement.’

Hartford police said Stachowicz was questioned and does not remember much of the night. He denied being racist.

” ‘Officer Stachowicz further stated that he does not make racial comments and that some of his best friends are African American,’ the report says.

The police department’s internal investigation found Stachowicz’s actions were ‘unbecoming (of) an employee’ and that Stachowicz violated policy by not reporting the incident to headquarters.

“Stachowicz joined the Hartford Police Department in November 2008.

According to the department’s internal affairs report, Stachowicz traveled to Foxwoods for a private whiskey tasting event but drank too much and was asked to leave.

“Security and tribal police later found him passed out on the casino floor and woke him up, at which point Stachowicz started verbally attacking them and told them he was an off-duty Hartford police officer, the report says.

Foxwoods staff told Hartford police Stachowicz spewed racial slurs and told them, ‘My grandfather owned your grandfather,’ according to the report.

” ‘That officer has been taken off the streets and is on administrative assignment within the police department,’ said Foley.

The union officials said the officer has a hearing on the issue next Thursday.

“Sources within the department said he could end up losing his job.

Attempts to contact Stachowicz on Thursday were not successful.”

This case is an example of the need for police union contract/bill of rights language and the disciplinary process for police officers to be reformed. Stachowicz was suspended twice before, yet he was still out on the streets. CP’s aforementioned policy paper will include specific demands. Stay tuned.

Bruce Dixon of Black Agenda Report shared a tweet from Ferguson movement leader DeRay McKesson, who favorably compared corporate funded charter schools to the Black Panthers’ free breakfast program. If you know anything about the Panthers, you know what a blasphemous remark that is. As I have pointed out previously in this space, privatization of education disproportionately impacts Black people, as state and municipal governments are the biggest employer of Blacks. Charter schools are a tool in the Wall Street campaign to roll back the wage and benefits gains by public sector workers. Read Dixon’s piece on money McKesson recently received from Yale University, and his position as the ruling class’ chosen “transformational leader”. Black folks have been bamboozled. Again. The street based movement against extrajudicial killings of Black people has been co-opted.

No Jerry Springer chair throwing this time in the second Republican presidential debate last week. Donald Trump made it clear that he doesn’t know what the hell he’s going to do if he’s elected. Trump, who hasn’t shut up since he announced his candidacy for President of the United States, did not speak for 30 MINUTES during a policy discussion among other candidates at the GOP debate. This buffoon remaining silent for a half hour is the equivalent of three solar eclipses occurring in one day. Trump reminds me of the time in grade school when I tried to give a book report on a book I didn’t read. Think Progress reported that Muslim organizations fear a spike in hate crimes, because of the way Trump responded to the bigot during his campaign town hall event last week in New Hampshire. Last Sunday CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Trump why he didn’t correct the moron who said America has a Muslim problem. Trump said he won’t be “politically correct” (translation: refrain from using racist language) and that there is a problem with radical Muslims in the world. Tapper asked Trump if he would have answered the same way if the man had said Blacks are a problem. Trump said no, which I don’t believe for a second.

Trump is a racist who agreed with a racist remark about Muslims. Not surprising at all. Trump and his supporters should just burn a cross already. My prediction: someone is going to perpetrate a major act of violence against people of color and invoke Trump’s name. Trump said he wants to deport all Mexicans and build a wall to keep them out. Last week he was right on the same page with that dumb hick, talking Final Solution crap about Muslims. How long do you think it will be until Trump and his lynch mob start talking about Black people? Trump told Fox News blowhard Bill O’Reilly that activists protesting against racial profiling and police violence are troublemakers. Trump is playing with fire as he continues to ratchet up his xenophobic, white nationalist rhetoric.
