Commentary on urban issues from a grassroots perspective. Next show Tuesday, December 15 at 9:00 PM. Mary Sanders and Arshad Saalik will join us. Mary will talk about the Spanish Speaking Center of New Britain, where she worked as executive director. SSC officially closed last month, after providing a variety of vital services to the city’s poor since 1964. We’ll discuss the unrest in Chicago over the police murder of Laquan McDonald and the subsequent cover up, the gang related murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee and the city’s poverty rate, an issue that has been mostly ignored by the corporate media. We’ll also talk about Islamophobia against Syrian refugees, the Colorado Springs/San Bernadino terror attacks, and the bipartisan war on the poor. Tune in! Replays the following Wednesday, same time.
False Choice: The Bipartisan Attack on the Working Class, the Poor and Communities of Color
Trebol Press has published my first nonfiction book on politics. The Democrats and Republicans spar publicly, but the reality is that these two parties have more in common than they have differences. This duopoly is run on corporatist economic policies that benefit the ruling class, at the expense of the workers and the poor. Global hegemony is at the core of the foreign policies of the Dems and the GOP. False Choice is a diary of national and global issues, set against the backdrop of the Connecticut gubernatorial election between Gov. Dannel Malloy and Republican challenger Tom Foley that was rated as the most negative in the country in 2014. The book also features commentary on politics at Hartford City Hall, including analysis of the highly controversial baseball stadium deal orchestrated by Mayor Pedro Segarra and City Council President Shawn Wooden. Visit the Trebol Press website for ordering info.   Check out the False Choice Author Page on Facebook for commentary on the Democratic/Republican duopoly and coverage of third party politics.

Police Murder & Gang Violence Grips Chicago
Chicago is emblematic of the conditions in Hartford and cities across the country. The police murder of Laquan McDonald and the gang related killing of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee are symptoms of the systemic issues in the city. Killer cops like Chicago PD officer Jason Van Dyke are protected by police bill of rights and union contract language, in addition to district attorneys who work closely with the police. A rigged grand jury process further insulates dirty cops from accountability.
Martin Luther King said that the most scared he had ever been was when he marched in Chicago. This was a man who marched in MISSISSIPPI and throughout the South. Chicago was the perfect location for a racist, killer cop like Jason Van Dyke, who murdered Laquan, a crime that was covered up by the Chicago Police Department and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.
Democracy Now! reported on Van Dyke being involved in another police murder. “In Chicago, court records show that police officer Jason Van Dyke, who has been indicted for shooting African American teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times, may have also played a role in the cover-up of another fatal police shooting a decade ago. The family of Emmanuel Lopez says that in 2005, five Chicago police officers shot Lopez 16 times and then falsely claimed he had tried to run over an officer with his car. In a deposition, Van Dyke admitted that he copied the statements of his fellow police officers in order to corroborate their story. Lopez’s family has brought a lawsuit over the killing, which goes to trial in February.”
Glen Ford of Black Agenda Report praised the revolutionary youth uprising in Chicago. “The young people that the are soldiers of this struggle understand that movements are defined by their demands. In a joint statement by the Black Youth Project 100, We Charge Genocide, Assata’s Daughters, the #LetUsBreathe collective, and a Black Lives Matter chapter, they declared that ‘Indicting cops does not change the policies that promote the violence and trauma inherent in the Chicago Police Department.’ They want Rahm Emanuel’s resignation, too. The Black Youth Project also demands defunding of the Chicago police, and investment of those dollars in the Black community. They call for reparations for slavery, Jim Crow and mass Black incarceration; an end to all profit in the criminal justice system; a guaranteed income for all; a federal jobs program, and freedom from discrimination for all workers; and an end to displacement of Black people through gentrification. These are demands for social transformation – demands that will put the young activists on a collision course with the Black Misleadership Class who are the first line of defense for the white ruling class, and who will soon close ranks in Chicago and elsewhere to try to stop this movement.”
Urban gun violence is fueled by poverty, Black/Latino unemployment, currently at Depression era levels, and racial wage/wealth disparity. It’s ironic that this explosive confluence of events is happening in Chicago, President Barack Obama’s hometown. Obama refused a 2009 demand from the Congressional Black Caucus that he implement targeted job creation in low income communities of color. Obama has not mentioned poverty or racial economic disparities in any of his State of the Union addresses. You reap what you sow.
The bigots who are going on about the lack of protests in Chicago for 9-year-old murder victim Tyshawn Lee don’t give a damn about that boy. These scumbags are using Tyshawn as a prop: they want Blacks to march with signs that say Down with Black Thugs instead of Jail Killer Cops. Fortunately the youth are talking about the economic conditions that lead to street gangs being the most powerful entity in low income communities of color. Lack of economic opportunity makes joining a gang seem like the only viable option for disenfranchised Black youths. Note that the bigots calling for Tyshawn protests in Chicago aren’t upset about the police murders of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, or 7-year-old Aiyana Jones in Detroit.
Terrorism and Radicalized White People
Bigots aren’t against terrorism, they’re against Muslims. When someone who is white (Dylann Roof, Robert Lewis Dear) commits a terrorist act, bigots try to explain it away as a mental health issue. Those same bigots are gloating over the San Bernardino terror attack. Bigots exhibit selective outrage. I will admit, bigots have a point when they say terrorism is a mental health issue: they all need a check up from the neck up. The corporate media are willing enablers: CNN completely stopped covering the terror attack on Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, to focus on the attack in San Bernadino. Their investigation of Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik has been exhaustive, while their examination of Robert Lewis Dear’s background lasted about 40 seconds.
I’m still trying to figure out how a Muslim can become radicalized by an ISIS tweet, but a white person can’t be radicalized by a fake Planned Parenthood video. Have scientists identified the gene that makes white people immune from being radicalized? If an individual is actually interested in joining a crew of glorified gangsters who behead, rape and pillage, isn’t that an indication of a deep rooted psychological issue? Are we really supposed to believe that a person who decides to roll with a terrorist organization, or commit an act of terrorism, didn’t already have violent impulses and was just looking for an outlet to act on those feelings? There have been 355 mass shootings in the United States in 2015: that’s more than one EVERY DAY.

784 hate groups are currently active in the United States.  Right-wingers use racist, violent rhetoric as they rail about  Obama trying to take away their guns.  The Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood terror attack was just the latest in an extensive history of attacks by anti-abortion extremists, dating back to 1977.  During the Obamacare debate in 2009 right-wingers came to town halls with handguns tucked in their waists, and automatic weapons on their shoulders.   Black churches are being burned in response to nationwide protests against racial profiling and police violence.  A group of white surpremacists were recently arrested by the FBI in Virginia, for plotting to bomb synagogues and Black churches. ISIS followers aren’t the only ones being radicalized in this country. The right-wing has been perpetuating a climate of terror for years.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was on the Sunday morning talk shows saying he wants to monitor Muslims in the U.S., and “take out” the families of Muslims suspected of being terrorists. Timothy McVeigh committed the worst act of domestic terrorism in the history of this country when he blew up the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma in 1995, killing 168 people and injuring over 600, yet Trump is not talking about monitoring right-wing extremist whites and ‘taking out’ their families. Bigots are using the terrorism issue to push their racist agenda.
